There are three questions to ask yourself before you build your own wind turbine. You don’t want to get started only to find that you live in the wrong area or aren’t allowed to put up a wind powered energy system. So before you being, you should take these questions into consideration when building a wind turbine.
First, is the wind speed in my area sufficient to generate enough electricity? You can obtain the answer to this question relatively easily. Every area has a US Weather Service office, and they can provide you the historical data that you can use to make your decision. If your wind speed averages just 10 miles per hour, you are in the green… to going green with your energy by using a wind turbine.
Second, are you legally allowed to have a wind turbine installed on your property? If you belong to a homeowner’s association, then you need to start there. It may be allowed in your area, but if your HOA says no, you have little ground to stand on. Also, check with your city or county local government to find out if there are any restrictions in place before you build your own wind turbine.
And third, am I going to follow directions to build this turbine properly and be dedicated to completing this project? I would never recommend taking this upon yourself with a detailed set of instructions. That part is actually pretty easy and I have a recommendation at the bottom of this page. But you also need to decide if you are the type of person who is going to get started, then quit when you find you are missing one part and then put it off for months.
Now, building your own wind turbine is not that difficult. If you are fairly handy, you can complete the task within a day. Even mechanically challenged people can do this. They may need a little more time, or help from a friend, but you can do this.
The key to success is in the blueprints. If you head into this with just a vague idea, you are more than likely going to fail. But, if you have a set of crystal clear step by step instructions that explain the how and the why of what you are doing, then you are going to succeed and find building your own wind turbine to be an easy task.
