How To Make A Wind Turbine

Going green is all the rage these days. But people looking for information on how to make a wind turbine aren’t always conservationists. Some just want to save extra money each month and stop paying outrageous energy bills. Regardless of your reason, I am here to tell you that building a wind turbine is easier than you might think. In fact, for those that live in an area with a decent amount of wind, using wind energy is a no brainer.

The first question everyone has before setting out on how to make a wind turbine is what is this going to cost me. Frankly the cost is a lot less than you would expect. A home made wind turbine that outputs about 1000w of energy is only going to cost under $200 for building supplies. Compare that with your average 80w solar panel that costs at least $200.

Advantages Of Wind Turbine over Solar Panel

A solar panel is going to store the energy it receives from the sunlight during the day. This means that on cloudy and rainy days, you are storing very little energy. Also, you are storing no energy at night. You will be dependent on a power hookup to get you through long spells of less than average energy storage. Still, this is a great technology and it will work for many people. It can even work in conjunction with wind turbines. In fact, using solar for your hot water while using wind energy for the rest of your needs is a great idea.

Wind turbines, on the other hand, generate and store energy any time there is wind. For most regions, this is all the time. It doesn’t matter if it is day or night. Cloudy? No problem. Storming? Even better as there will certainly be wind. And wind turbines are extremely efficient.

How to Make a Wind Turbine

It is a lot easier to build your own wind turbine than most people realize. First and foremost, I recommend selecting a quality guide that gives you not only a good deal of background information, but a set of high quality instructions. I mean instructions that leave nothing to chance. In other words, trust a guide book from someone who has been there, done that. Forget fancy graphics on their sales page and all that hoopla.

Back to what I was saying… wind turbines are actually easy to build. Your local hardware store is going to have all the parts you need. You won’t need to special order anything. And you should find everything to be affordable. If you are the scavenging type, you can check a scrap yard for some of the parts. One of the materials you can use is PVP tubes. Now think of all the places you can pick that up cheap!

What Parts Make Up The Wind Turbine

There are five main components to your wind turbine. These are the base, which is the bottom part that will support the tower. The tower is attached to the base and stands up into the sky at whatever length you determine so that you can begin to harness the power of the wind. The shaft attaches to the tower and enables rotation. The blades attach to the shaft and are designed in a way to catch the wind and rotate. Finally, the energy harnessed is transferred to the generator which converts that mechanical energy into your electricity.

There is no doubt that building a wind turbine is great for your budget and for the environment. People who are handy with tools will have no problem setting one of these up in a morning or afternoon. Even those who aren’t so mechanically inclined can build one of these if they can follow simple instructions.
